Known as the “Historic Waterfront Gateway City,” Sanford sits on the southern shore of Lake Monroe at the head of navigation on the St. Johns River. Native Americans first settled in the area thousands of years before the city was formed, and since then Sanford has been connected to many famous Americans, from several U.S. presidents to Jackie Robinson and a host of legendary sports figures.
Take a break from the thunderous crowds of Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld and the rest of the tourist zone to journey to this waterfront village just a half hour ride north of Orlando. Original Orlando Tours will start your day at the Henry Shelton Sanford Memorial Library and Museum to get an overview of the rich history of the town that we will see shortly.
Then it’s on to historic downtown Sanford, for a guided tour of its Southern charm setting of brick streets, restored buildings and sidewalk cafes. Bring your appetite because along the way we’ll treat you to a great lunch before giving you time on your own to further explore, browse and shop (with exclusive Original Orlando discounts) in this beautiful waterfront town.
Finally we ride past some iconic local sites, including Sanford Stadium, where baseball legend Jackie Robinson first broke the color barrier as he took to the field in 1946 on your way back to hotels, rides and attractions of the Orlando tourist zone.

By the first decade of the 20th century, Sanford was one of the largest vegetable shipping centers in the United States and received the nickname “Celery City” for its abundance of crops. Lake Monroe, bordering the north end of downtown Sanford, flows into the St. John’s river, which flows south to north, all the way to downtown Jacksonville and on out to the Atlantic Ocean.
This tour is only offered in English. Florida weather is unpredictable and may impact the tour. If the weather is deemed unsafe by our guide due to weather conditions prior to commencement of the tour, Original Orlando Tours will offer a substitute tour at the original day and time, offer a credit to be used on any future Original Orlando Tours adventure, or fully refund the tour fee, the choice of which is at the option of our special guests impacted by the weather disruption. There are no refunds once the tour has commenced (i.e., the vehicle has left your departure point). This tour also includes an Orlando discount savings booklet. We suggest wearing a hat, comfortable shoes and sunscreen to make your tour an enjoyable one in warm months as well as a jacket in cooler weather.
